The Communal Mirror
2008
View your world as live animated online data.

* discussed in paper for Leonardo Almanac

This piece takes live data from web pages around the world and
uses the words as colored stamps to draw live video.
It is great for installations where you can't do much to control the lighting.
The installation is suprizingly simple and uses any
USB or firewire connected camera.
* the art.
This web Applet requires a camera (USB webcam, camcorder, etc.) and
Quicktime (preinstalled on Macs, available online free for Windows, Linux, etc.)
For shows, I highly recommend a stand-alone full-screen version,
but this is fun for now.

*Tech Explanation:
|
The image on the screen is familiar, though it's unclear what exactly
it is depicting - at first. In a gallery setting, when
initially seeing the piece from across the room, it may simply look like
a pastoral, painterly rendition of that very room in the gallery from the
piece's perspective. This is somewhat true. But as the viewer approaches,
the image is disrupted. Perhaps the viewer notices that the image is
composed of letters, and may even notice words. Soon, perhaps the viewer
realizes that the image has incorporated them into that picture.
