Epidemiology

2009, 2006

keywords (in alphabetical order): Democracy; Friedrich Nietzsche; Thomas Jefferson; William James; autogenerative; complexity; democracy; emergent system; emergent system; human rights; memetic; networking; utopia; viral

In creating the software Epidemiology, where colored dots collide and have a certain chance of reproducing, thus passing on one or the other color, limitations of the model became quickly apparent. The animated graphic is obviously a model of evolution. The source modeled is clearly more complex. However, the model was used to illustrate, not any real evolutionary process, but to illustrate a concept in democracy/dictatorship. The code does not presume to describe reality. It merely shows how, in a perfectly democratic system, extremes in dominance are always temporary, but ultimately no progress can ever be made without continuous interaction between democracy and dictatorship. For instance, in the classroom, in absolute free play, the children would not learn about ancient Mayan ruins, yet a teacher who merely lectures the students on the subject will surely not engage more than a few. The two governing forces (essentially pedagogies) must interact.
