Crickets

In many cultures, crickets are good luck. They are also good thermometers.

Did you know if you hear a cricket chirp you can get the temperature? They are surprisingly accurate little buggers too. Just count chirps for 17 seconds and add 40 to what you get. (Thanks Discover.)

The piece Crickets accumulates weather data via the web from cities throughout the world. As the program gathers the data, virtual crickets gather in your computer. Soon their mating calls are juxtaposed, creating overlapping rhythmic loops. (Sounds a little like a Steve Reich composition, no doubt.)
